If u have a 25-hydroxy D level of 24 ng/mL u are very deficient. The 25-hydroxy D (25(OH)) which is measured in ng/mL and in nmol/L measures the stored D.The optimum levels are 60- 80 ng/mL (150- 200 nmol/L) http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/11/21/how-to-get-your-vitamin-d-to-healthy-ranges.aspxAs a general rule, taking approx 3,000 iu of D3 as cholecalciferol per 100 lbs of body weight will maintain D levels. The best way to get D is by the sun or good quality tanning bed. However, I have seen some really amazing results ... 1,538 hits

Paraboy is correct, your goal is 80 ng/ml but you need a LOT more than 1,000 IU daily. You should start at 10,000 IU Daily of oil based Softgels. Then after 3 months get your blood tested for D3. Hi Iolite, the only reliable test of D status is with 25(OH)D and where optimum levels are disputed, but make sure you are getting the right test which is 25(OH)D, NOT 1,25(OH)D. They look similar, but 1,25(OH)D is a measure of kidney function, and is not the test you want for measuring vitamin D levels generally.Ideally, your blood level should be around 60-80 ng/ml, as this allows the body to have some vitamin D in reserve.Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council, has said that anyone should take 1,000 IU per 25 pounds of body weight.
