Synopsis

Isabella, the daughter of the noble York family, is enrolled in an all-girls academy to be groomed into a dame worthy of nobility. However, she has given up on her future, seeing the prestigious school as nothing more than a prison from the outside world. Her family notices her struggling in her lessons and decides to hire Violet Evergarden to personally tutor her under the guise of a handmaiden.

At first, Isabella treats Violet coldly. Violet seems to be able to do everything perfectly, leading Isabella to assume that she was born with a silver spoon. After some time together, Isabella begins to realize that Violet has had her own struggles and starts to open up to her. Isabella soon reveals that she has lost contact with her beloved younger sister, Taylor Bartlett, whom she yearns to see again.

Having experienced the power of words through her past clientele, Violet asks if Isabella wishes to write a letter to Taylor. Will Violet be able to help Isabella convey her feelings to her long-lost sister?

tl;dr: A decent enough side story type sequel film.

This film is a sequel to the main anime series, and thus the main series should definitely be watched before watching this. It is essentially composed of two deeply connected standalone episodes, though they’re less interconnected than I expected considering that they’re two halves of the same film. The first act focuses on Isabella York, a girl that was living an impoverished life until it turned out she was actually the illegitimate child of some noble and was then thrust into a boarding school to mold her into someone worth marrying off. I was hoping for some world class Yuri after feeling quite disappointed after the santa claus special, but it was just fine I guess.

Animation beautiful as always, though that's something to be expected when you're dealing with Violet. Sometimes it looks so beautiful I Feel like it's all just passing me by, so overwhelming.

Extended lore for Violet Evergarden! This should be exciting, right? In truth, although the story does hit hard a little bit by the end (no spoilers), this movie doesn't do it as well as any episode of the original series. Even episode 12 is more emotionally gripping (and that one's not great). It's too bad we don't have a continuation of the original story, as I hear the 2020 movie retcons a bit too. Watch at your own risk.
